Playmakers - High School Girls - Spring 2025 Practice Summaries
Day 1
On Day 1 we introduced our core concepts:
Efficient Shot Selection and Discipline:
Work for 1.) Layups, then 2.) Open, in-rhythm shots
Avoid: Challenged, difficult, off-balance shots away from the rim. Especially with no time limit.
Spacing: Maintain space throughout the possession
Ball Movement: Make quick decisions to play to the open space (either by pass or drive)
Player Movement: Cut or screen away after the pass. Continually balance the floor through these actions to force the defense to defend the whole court and pull the help away from the ball.
Day 2
On Day 2, we introduced screening and introduced our defensive principles
Screening:
We want 1 player to cut to the rim, and 1 player outside the 3 point line available for the ball
Receiver options are: Reject, Split, Curl, or Pop. The first read is to reject the screen if overplayed
Screener options are: Slip the screen (cut to the rim), pop back to the ball
Defense:
Pressure & Contain the ball, Disciplined closeouts, maintain shape, Help rotations
Day 3
On Day 2, we did a deep dive on relocations
Relocating is what the players off the ball do when a teammate drives. This has a couple purposes:
Moves the help defense away from the ball
It creates multiples passing windows for the driver
If players do not relocate, the defense is more likely to disrupt the driver, and be able to take away any passing options for the driver
Progression: Side advantage, Blind advantage, Live Dribble, Mid possession
We also reviewed how to use the dribble:
Either to attack the basket, dribble at a teammate (forcing them to cut), or to correct for spacing issues
